A “green screen” refers to filming with the subject in front of a large screen which is generally green or blue. This is also sometimes called “chroma key“. By filming this way you can after take this video and remove the green screen from the video using video editing software (such as Kdenlive or Magix Video pro). You may also need to remove the frame around the green screen if the video is larger than the screen. Finally you end up with a video that has only the subject on a transparent background. You can then put a background of your choice behind the subject, it could be another video, such as a video of the forest or a snowstorm 😛 or it could be just a picture or a solid color.
For example a solid white background may be a good idea if you want to make a professional “corporate” looking video instead of showing your apartment in the background. It can help your video look more professional but also keep from distracting the audience with elements from the background allowing them to focus on your message.
Of course it can also allow you, lets say you want to make a video clip, to film yourself playing your guitar in front of the green screen first, and decide later where you will put yourself, if you wanted to be, lets say in a factory, then you just need to grab a picture of the inside of a factory and put it in the background. It is awesome because the result will be a video of you playing guitar in a factory and yet you never have to set foot in a factory at all, you can just film in your apartment and use images from the internet to place you in a multitude of awesome places, much cooler than your apartment 😉
Another interesting thing that you can do with a green screen is put a person multiple times in a same shot. For example if you want to make a video of 2 yourselves having a conversation you could film yourself having the first side of the conversation normally but alone, pretending you’re talking to “the other you”. Then you film yourself having the second side of the conversation in front of a green screen. Next you use the video editing software to place the second you in the first video and you will have a video of you having a conversation with yourself.
The possibilities are endless!!
But the best part is that making green screen video is simple and can be done without any expensive professional equipment. You can use a bunch of household articles, get practically any green material for your screen, film with your phone, edit with open source software and do all this awesome stuff for a very modest price and without much technical knowledge and I will show you how 🙂
